Leon Rausch

I was very sad to hear of the death of Leon Rausch recently. Leon is probably best known as vocalist with Bob Wills' Texas Playboys during parts of the 50s and 60s but had a fairly successful solo career beyond that and has rightly been seen as one of western swing's greatest voices for many years. ...

I wonder how many people there'd be in the intersection of a Venn Diagram of Chris Young fans and Groupon users ....

Re: The Long Road Festival - Stanford Hall Leicestershire

This years looks really very very good. Sadly committed to a different festival that weekend, live in hope Josh Turner will play a solo date outside of the weekend. Yeah, good lineup. I'd like to see Turner and Asleep at the Wheel but both are headlining different stages on the Sunday! And the fact...

Re: Scott Walker

I loved Scott Walker's solo albums, especially the Brell songs. I have heard a numnber of artistes singing Brell, but to me Scott Waler's interpretrations remain the best. I love the lines from Jacky :"If I could be for just one little hour Cute, cute, cute in a stupid-ass way". The way Scott siung...

Scott Walker

I was sad to hear of the death of Scott Walker. I know that he had his biggest success as part of The Walker Brothers but it was his Jacques Brel covers which really appealed to me, I loved the arrangements especially. He recorded a couple of Brel tracks on each of his first 4 albums, which were lat...

Re: Does an artistes charachter affect how you listen to their music?

Spade Cooley "A minor figure in Western swing"??? His band were second only to Bob Wills in the 1940s and he had a live syndicated TV for about 10 years. He wrote "Shame On You", which has probably been sung by every country singer ever! Minor?? Yeah it's true that he appears to have been a right b*...

Not bad! I like Josh Turner, can't remember him being in the UK before. Asleep at the Wheel? Excellent! Gotta hope a) it's the whole band and not just Ray Benson and fiddle player, and b) they play some dates elsewhere!

Re: The Greatest Country Albums Ever Made

Not a top 10 - hurts my brain to try and think up such a list! - but here's a few that I go back to time and time again! I can't believe I forgot Johnny Bush and "Lost Highway Saloon" ! What a fantastic album, featuring the most amazing band - Bobby Flores on fiddles (and producing), with Buddy Emm...

"Willie & The Wheel"! A fantastic collection ... it's regularly on the iPod or in the car, must be the album I've played most in the last 10 years. I really wish they'd do a follow up!
I'd love to see the rest of this show ...

Re: Ameripolitan Awards 2019

Country music awards, like all these sorts of things, Oscars, etc., are weird. The one that stands out for its weirdness here, for me, is Justin Trevino getting an award for Best Western Swing Male. I like Justin, he's a nice guy and he's made some great music but western swing? Weird!! But when you...

Re: The Greatest Country Albums Ever Made

As you say, hugely subjective! Looking at your list Moshe, I have to repeat what I said recently on Facebook: though I'm quite happy to hear Johnny Cash on the radio (and the same goes for Dolly, Patsy Cline, etc) it's really unlikely that I would choose to play anything by them! Not a top 10 - hurt...

Re: TOTAL COUNTRY

I dunno, I quite enjoy Keep It Country TV. You're right, there's a lot of Irish music - I can never understand why they'll play a seemingly identi-kit video of an Irish singer standing by a river or hilly view singing an identi-kit cover of a song we all know better by someone else ... why not just ...
